Haunted Serenade
by
Anna M. Taylor
PG-13

All the women in Anora Madison's family have lived haunted by the curse of Poor Butterfly: women still longing for but deserted by the men they loved. Determined to be the first to escape a life of abandonment, Anora fled Harlem for Brooklyn, not only severing her ties with her mother Angela, but also ending her relationship with Winston Emerson, her lover and the father of her child.
Six years later, Anora comes home to make peace, but an unseen evil manifests itself during the homecoming and targets not only Anora, but her little girl Cammie.
With nowhere to run, Anora must confront the evil now trying to destroy her life. She vows to protect her daughter at all costs, but if that protection can only be found with Winston back in her life, how will Anora protect her heart?

Inspiration for the Story
Haunted Serenade was inspired by the Duke Ellington classic, Solitude. Two lines in particular inspired my plot, “In my solitude you haunt me” and “With gloom everywhere I sit and I stare I know that I’ll soon go mad.” The image of a woman grieving a lost love put me in mind of how and why love is lost or thwarted or longed for. This lead me to the question each of the stories in my Haunted Harlem series seeks to answer, “What is a ghost except a longing that will not die or a love waiting to be born? I set Haunted Serenade in the early sixties, a time of full of events steeped in turmoil and hope for African-Americans here in the US and Africans abroad. Against this external backdrop, I wanted to tell a story of how the ghosts of the past for one family interfere with their opportunity of reunion in the present and the possibility of hope presented by the future. The issue of colorism and the role it played and still plays in the African-American community provided the seed for the internal conflict that enables the supernatural element in my story to thrive. When my heroine Anora Madison and my hero Winston Emerson confront this issue, the secret haunting Anora and her family is revealed, confronted and exorcised thus enabling, Anora, Winston and the Madison family to achieve the HEA they all deserve.
D. V.'s review
I love a ghost story. That said, this book is haunting and not because of the ghost.
Though based in the past, it’s certainly a book for these troubled times. It reminds me of a verse from Ecclesiastes, There’s nothing new under the sun.
It’s the early 1960s—a time of great upheaval in U.S. history. Mirror images of today’s civil strife against hate and racism are as appalling. And it’s at this time we’re plunged into a family torn apart by the issues of color and unforgiveness.
After a bombing, which took the lives of three children in the south, the main character, Anora, despite the family schism, takes her six-year-old daughter to see her grandmother for the first time. When Anora began a relationship with a dark-skinned man, both she and her mother shared horrid words, and the hurt to both goes deep and long. Anora left home.
Realizing time is short, and so much is at stake, Anora’s mother calls her home to the family house in Harlem. The bitterness between the people in the house feeds a spirit who has the ability to harm them.
The characters are relatable, the world-building grounding, and the ghost story enthralling. It is a poignant tale of the importance of choosing words carefully and seeking forgiveness before it’s too late. Some scenes can be disturbing though not graphic more the idea of what people are capable of—both to the good and the evil.
I highly recommend this book by Ms. Taylor.

Around the Fire Welcomes Back Sadira Stone

10/26/2022

How did we get near the end of October? The seasons seem to fly past. It feels like just the other day the garden was blooming and the trees so full of green. But as Dolly said in Steel Magnolia's- Truvy: Time marches on and sooner or later you realize it is marchin' across your face. Well, I won't talk about my laugh lines and I got a few more when today's guest sent her picture. It's been a long time since my fellow Rose and I sat together and chatted.
Picture
Hey Cuz, Welcome back. (We share the same name.) While I take care of my hostess duties why don't you reintroduce yourself.
I’m an ex-expat, having lived for nearly thirty years in Germany. I’m a brand-new grandmother! I’m a still-slightly-homesick Pacific Northwest girl who recently moved to Las Vegas and is trying to sink roots in the desert. I’m a Zumba queen, a bookaholic, a collector of far too many cookbooks, and person you’d best not talk to until she’s had her coffee. Lately, I’ve developed an addiction to advice columns—tons of great writing inspiration there!

Oh, coffee before talkie. That's my motto as well. It must be tough moving to a new place that's so different. Who helps you get through it all?
I’m so grateful to my writing friends from the former Olympia, Washington chapter of RWA, since disaffiliated from the mother ship but still meeting regularly online, as well as the generous authors of Contemporary Romance Writers, the friends I made at The Wild Rose Press, and all the authors who’ve been so generous with their knowledge and experience. We truly are a #WritingCommunity. I’m also grateful to Hubs. It’s not easy for an athletic extrovert to grok the writing life, but he’s always supportive and patient.

Other writers are amazing and so helpful. Having a partner who understands is priceless too. Who or what books or authors are your inspiration?
Too many to count! For historical romance, I’m a huge fan of Sarah MacLean, Tessa Dare, and my writing pal Cari Davis. Among my favorite contemporary romance authors are Lucy Score, Tessa Bailey, J.T. Geissinger, Claire Kingsley, Talia Hibbert, Rebekah Weatherspoon, Michelle McCraw, Jami Davenport, Laurie Ryan, and Marie Tuhart.

Wow that's some list. Do you have any fun or outrageous talent?
I’m a good cook and can belly dance with a sword balanced on my head.

Cooking is one of my happy places as well. Not much of a sword dancer though. Your mentioned your new home what's the neighborhood like? Are there any places you frequent? What makes them special?
I recently moved to Summerlin, Nevada, a neighborhood on the west side of Las Vegas. Think palm trees, a bazillion desert cottontails because of the golf course running through our neighborhood, coyotes at dusk, hawks overhead, striated mountains and red rock canyons, the Las Vegas Strip a thirty-minute drive away. Hubs and I have joined our community music club, where I’ve met some fun people with amazing music chops. Needless to say, the dining options in Vegas boggle the mind. Good thing our community comes with a gym! And did you know that Las Vegas boasts amazing public libraries? They host multiple free concerts each month.

When I think of Las Vegas all I picture is the strip. You paint quite a different view of it. Do you have a particular object like a piece of jewelry or a keepsake of some sort? Can you tell us what makes it special to you?
I collect crystals, minerals, and semi-precious stones. My favorite pieces include two bracelets of lapis lazuli beads and a pendant of carnelian, an excellent stone for writers.

One of my favorite places is the Franklyn Mine Museum. They have an amazing array of those and I can spend hours standing and looking at them. What is your favorite mug or teacup if neither T-shirt with graphic or Meme
My daughter gave me a mug that reads “F--- off. I’m writing.”

Lol! Short sweet and to the point. If you could only choose one song to play every time you walked into a room for the rest of your life, what would it be?
“I Am What I Am” by Gloria Gaynor

If you could time travel, where would you go and when? Why?
I’ve always been fascinated by the 1920s, a time of tremendous social change, especially for women. Also, they threw great parties back then! And who doesn’t want to dance atop a piano in a beaded flapper dress?

We love game night at our house. Do you play board games? Which ones?
Chicken Foot, a fast-paced domino game; Blitz, a fast-paced card game that doesn’t require much math or special terminology; and Catch Phrase—also fast-paced! I sense a theme.

What’s the most amazing natural occurrence you’ve witnessed?
On December 26th, 1999, we were heading from our home in Germany toward France, where we’d rented a country cottage, and passed through an amazing windstorm that snapped tall pines like toothpicks. The entire region lost power for several days. I’ve never seen or felt anything like it.

How do you select the names of your characters?
Easy! I just look up the most popular baby names from the year they were born and pick one that feels right.
Yep, that's what I do. I go to the Social Security site and they list the names by year. Sadira, thank you so much for popping by the fire. It's always fun to catch up with friends. Before you head out will you give us a peek at your latest release and where our other guests can find out more about it and you?

Review of Sweet Slow Sizzle
“As in Sadira Stone's other novels, her themes go beyond those found in a typical romance. The situations she depicts are realistic. There are no perfect knights in shining armor or peerless princesses. Stone’s use of every life day situations brings a deep humanity to her novels that is lacking in most romances.”

Heartsong Hills is a beautiful sequel written by Wendy Stetson. I must preface this by saying my first teaching job was in an Amish school in Northern Ohio where Nora’s less strict relatives live in the book. The authenticity of Stetson’s descriptions of the farmer's market, the plain Christmas celebration, the frolic, and the characters took me right back. I can place people from the community in the shoes of her characters and they fit. Needless to say, I absolutely loved this book.

Around the Fire with Wendy Kendall

Oh, my. We are in the middle of October! Friends of mine from Minnesota sent pictures of the snow piling up. I used to live in Brainerd MN so I know the feeling. Regardless, of the weather outside it's always cozy Around the Fire and today's guest is brining Christmas Cookies and romance. So please help me welcome today's special guest Wendy Kendall.
Picture
Hi, Wendy. Thanks for joining us at the fire. While I pour us a nice hot cocoa why don't you introduce yourself.
Nice to meet you. I'm the youngest of three daughters, and the mother of two now-adult sons. I relish jumping into the midst of adventures, and I'm intrigued when pursuing clues to life's mysteries, and my heart beats to the rhythm of an incurable romantic.

I Love the picture you sent! I adore an adventurous spirit. What interests besides writing do you enjoy? For instance, what do you read or hobbies you have?
It's a picture on a hike of Mt. Rainier. The mountain is mentioned in my story in reference to the fields and fields of fragrant wildflowers on the mountain in the spring, and how the scent is similar to my character Liz's perfume. I have an artistic collection of purses and handbags, including vintage pieces dating back to the 1800's. A few years ago I was delighted to visit the Esse Purse Museum that tells women's history through the purses carried through the decades. So fun! Just one of only 3 purse museums in the world. I love biking and hiking, and roaming beach shorelines. I'm just a girl who can't say no to reading books, any books, but I confess to an added passion for Mysteries and Romances.

I have several purses that I consider "artistic" but I have to confess, since retiring my purse is either a wallet or backpack. I have several people who are my go-tos for encouragement and advice. Who is your network or support system?
My crit group is incredible. We stick together through thick and thin. We've learned so much together over the years. We meet weekly to read pages, learn craft, and analyze each other's work. We encourage, help, praise, keep each other honest to our story and characters, and best of all we are dear friends. My family is also very supportive of all my efforts. One of my sons is a gourmet chef, and he has created some delicious, original recipes to go with some of my books.

I wish I had a chef in my group but alas I'm the cook. However I do love it. Who or what books or authors are your inspiration?
My hero cozy mystery author is Laura Childs. She has several series, but my favorite is her Tea Shop series. I have a couple of YouTube podcasts where I interview authors and on Kendall & Cooper Talk Mysteries we interviewed Laura Childs. It was thrilling for me when she accepted our invitation and I got to meet her virtually. My co-host Julie and I even went to a local tea shop and they created a special tea blend dedicated to Laura Childs. We sent it to her and she loved it!

That's wonderful and so fun! Do you have any fun or outrageous talent?
I'm a tap dancer! It's so fun, but my talent only runs so far. Guess that's why Gregory Hines never invited me to be his tap partner.

I love finding old movies with tap dancing. What is your neighborhood like? Are there any places you frequent? What makes them special?
My neighborhood is very hilly, and when you head downhill to the west you'll end up at the beautiful Puget Sound and the ferry dock. I love to sit out near the ferry dock and watch the ships sail over to the Olympic Peninsula, imagining stories about the people on board, and who they're traveling to meet up with, and the adventures they'll have.

That sounds wonderful. What a view. Do you have a favorite t-shirt, mug, or slogan?
In tribute to my 4 cozy mysteries, I have a new favorite t-shirt that I got this summer while book signing at Killer Nashville. It's especially poignant now with the recent passing of the incredible Dame Angela Lansbury. The T-shirt shows in big, bold type print – Murder, I Wrote.  That text shows over a silhouette of the Nashville skyline.

What was your favorite book growing up?
My favorite childhood book was the Anne of Green Gables series. I treasure those books, still have them all. What beautifully memorable characters. I love them all, from the very first and all the way through to Anne as an adult with kids of her own.

Have you ever won something?
When I was about 10 years old I was called up on stage at a spring children's show to be the magician's assistant. At the end he pulled a live rabbit out of a hat and gave it to me as a prize for helping him! I was thrilled. When I got home, my mother was not pleased.

Lol, I won't tell you how many animals followed me home that my parents were not pleased over. What is the most What’s the most amazing natural occurrence you’ve witnessed?
I had no idea what an emotional experience it would be to watch the sunrise over the Grand Canyon. I'll never forget it, the amazing sense of peace, tranquility, and hope that bubbled within me to see that sight. I'm so happy I was able to share that event with my older son.

I've written scenes that made me cry like a baby. What was your hardest scene to write?
Maybe not the hardest scene, but certainly difficult and worth the effort with how happy I am with how it turned out. It's in my first book, Kat Out of the Bag. Kat is Katherine Watson an amateur sleuth / purse designer. In addition to her purse empire, she opens a purse museum and Amber is the college student who runs the gift shop. Amber's boyfriend is jailed on suspicion of murder. The scene when Amber visits Michael in jail is heartrending. A reader wrote and told me that scene brought her to tears. I confessed to her, I was in tears when I wrote it.

Wendy, I believe that is our job as authors. To move readers, provoke them, and inspire them. Thank you for sharing my fire today. Before you head out on your next adventure, will you tell us more about your book and where to find out more about you?

A Peek Inside
The whales’ frenzied song grew even louder—the electrical atmosphere intensified.
“Now what’s happening? We’re dissolving!” Clara yelled, watching her little hands disappear and then reappear again.
Angelica observed different parts of the ship, their cats, their bodies, and the monkey crew all vanishing momentarily. She drew a sharp breath. She was about to say something when the ethereal whale swimming directly before them opened its massive mouth, saltwater pouring down its yawning maw that seemed miles and miles deep.
“This is madness!” Clara shrieked, staring down the vast gaping throat of the beast.
“Even a hurricane would be much better than this. We’re going to die, for sure!” Angelica lost her composure. “Turn the ship!” she demanded. “I don’t wanna die!”
“Impossible!” Claudius cried. “We must go!”
“I’m gonna be sick!” Clara cried, her face pasty. She clasped her sister’s scrawny hand in horror. What lay before them was far worse than that scary roller coaster Angelica had once convinced her to try at their town fair.
Catapulted forward by the hurrying tide, Claudius’s ship now sailed upon the phantasm of a massive whale. The sleek vessel hung momentarily on the edge of the watery precipice of white light, then slipped straight down the monster’s wide-open chasm…

What others are saying
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The Warlock’s Curse by C.B. Oresky is a thought-provoking journey across the cosmos. Centered around two girls who are anything but ordinary, the story of overcoming personal problems and fighting to save countless lives has multiple layers of depth. This fantastic tale dares to explore multi-dimensional travel, differing modes of existence, and deep philosophical themes seldom found in middle-grade fiction. www.goodreads.com/book/show/62200898-the-warlock-s-curse#other_reviews

Hi Reet! I'm so glad you could join me today and I'm excited to have you here. While I pour us a cup will you share with the other guests who you are other than your official bio?
I am an eye surgeon and I practiced for years and years and taught (a few) generations of medical students before I retired four years ago. Now I am occasional care provider but also a caregiver and I try and fit my writing and my other hobbies into an uncertain schedule.

Hmm, I see. LoL, get it? I see? Sorry, sometime I can't help myself. I bet you haven't heard that one before. What interests besides writing do you enjoy? For instance, what do you read or hobbies you have?
I absolutely adore crochet and find it difficult to pass a wool store by without stopping, staring and yearning. I own hooks of every size and have a cupboard full of wool just in case there’s an emergency and I have to create something at short notice. Ha ha, but also, I’m not kidding!
Another love - a new one - is gardening. I have recently acquired a tiny garden that I am having fun growing things in. As a previous novice indoor plant keeper, I have only ever killed the plants I’ve brought home, so this whole process of going from seed to plant to edible stuff is thrilling.

How fun. I've hooked a few lap blankets in my past. My mom taught me how. Gardening is also a wonderful way to decompress and provide for the table. I believe that we don't enter this author world as a single entity but need others to encourage and hold our hand at times.  Who contributes to your writing career.
My family – husband, sons, parents, siblings, cousins, nieces and nephews – are rock-solid supporters of my writing. I also have writer friends who keep me going with their words of wisdom and with help beta-reading and critiquing my work. A big shout out to them!

Do you have any fun or outrageous talent?
My cooking is fun for me and outrageous for the purists among my family and friends. I count my creativity in the kitchen as a talent that I’m rather pleased with. I love mixing ingredients and often end up with concoctions that delight some (me especially) and alarm others. I can’t seem to stick to conventional recipes – really, I have tried and failed. Mixing and matching is much more interesting!

You're my kind of cook. I'll glance at a recipe but then all bets are off. What is your neighborhood like? Are there any places you frequent? What makes them special?
I am quite a stay-at-home kind now. Having commuted to work my whole working life – through maddening traffic that included a bedlam of cars, trucks, rickshaws, buses, cyclists and pedestrians – I love not having to move about as much. We still have to eat though, and I like visiting the farmer’s market once a week. It is close enough that we can walk there and be back in less than 15 minutes. The sight of all those carts full of fresh vegetables and fruit [and freshly made popcorn – yum!] is uplifting and our cotton bags are soon full of goodies. Then, there’s a gourmet cheese, chocolate, and bread store that I adore visiting – walking distance too, so it’s convenient though expensive.

That sounds ideal. I adore farmer's markets and all the fresh things they offer. If they made a movie about your life, what would the title be, and who would play you?
“Tumultuous” an action thriller starring Catherine Zeta Jones as Reet Singh. Tagline: Restive rebel takes on world that spurns the offbeat.

I would be first on line for a ticket. If you could only choose one song to play every time you walked into a room for the rest of your life, what would it be?
“I could have danced all night” from My Fair Lady. It’s the song my heart sang the day I met the man I was to marry. We’ve been together thirty-six years now and it’s still my favorite song (and he, my favorite man).

So romantic! Would you rather have unlimited international first-class tickets or never have to pay for food at restaurants?
No contest – definitely travel over food!

What subjects should be taught in school but aren’t?
Diversity, Gender, Inclusion, and Accessibility: from day one, and repeated (scaled up in an age appropriate way) every year of school.

If someone came up to you and said, “Hey, do that thing you do!” what thing would pop into your head first?
I’d sing. It’s my thing. I function in terms of songs. Happy? Sing joyous songs. Sad? Sing songs of separation and broken hearts. Cooking? Washing dishes? Sing anything to get through chores!

I'm exactly like that! Everything is a song. Do you read your book reviews? How do you deal with bad or good ones?
I do read them (I don’t have hundreds of them). The good ones thrill me no end, but the bad ones galvanize me into addressing the thing in my next book – the thing that bothered the reader. I’m not perfect, obviously, and I appreciate honest critique. The only reviews that trouble me are the ones where the reviewer is rude. It is quite unnecessary to target the author as a person in one’s review. Such reviews sting. I – fortunately – have not had many of the mean kinds.
Reet, thank you so much for spending time with us today. I love your cover. The colors are so vibrant. Could you share a bit about it? I'd also ask if you would let us know where to find out more about it and you.

leena varghese: 5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful read!
Reviewed in India 🇮🇳 on 28 November 2020
“Reet Singh knows how to create a perfect romance. Of all the heroes created in her books, Danvir will remain my favourite. I am happy that compassion and humanity have not left the pages of romance novels yet. The story had everything in place without once being over the top or dull.
I loved the way self-awareness and transformation in both the characters was shown as the story developed. I would have given more stars if there was an option only for the way, disease, loss and grief was handled. This one was beautiful and heartwarming at every level, and so much more than a mere HEA.
A wonderful read!”

More about the Author and where to find her.
My love affair with books began when I was a tot. A fabulous mother, who recognized the power of the written word, read to me and my sisters every night, introducing us to the wonderful world of the imagination. Once I could read on my own, I graduated from fairy tales to adventure stories to romance, spending all my pocket money on books. My father served in the army and took the family along mostly wherever he went, resulting in experiences that beg to find a place in my books.
Writing about love and happy endings feeds my romantic soul; hearing from my readers thrills me.

From the author.
The theme of Fatal Hunt, and the rest of the Fatal Series, is the unconditional love we hold in our heart for those nearest and dearest to us and how far we’re capable of going to protect them.

D.V.'s Review
Fatal Hunt is a non-stop thrill ride. Just when you think you can breathe, another twist, and a family on the run and back in danger. Who’s out to get them? The bad guys, of course, but who are the bad guys? The mob boss? The assassin? The FBI? The friend? The mysterious woman?
Pregnant Jessica, her husband, a retired FBI agent Jon and their 8-year-old son Bryce are all targets running from their home, to a hideout, to a safe house. Even their relatives are in peril. I love Jessica’s Aunt Debbie, who takes matters into her own hands in one showdown.
Just when you think you get it, the ghost of Jessica’s decease husband shows up. The world-building and descriptions pull you in, and don’t let go.
I highly recommend this hang-on-to-your-seat thriller with a loving couple and son.

About the author
Growing up as an only child in a small town, with only my imagination for company, I dreamed of becoming an author. My father laughed and said something like: okay, but you might be broke. I shrugged and kept clacking on the keyboard of our home PC, delighted when my words appeared on the small monitor, a staple of early 90s technology.
After high school, I obtained an Honours Degree in Criminology from the University of Ottawa thinking that would be my future career. But at the back of my mind, the dream of writing for a living persisted.
Fast forward fifteen years, and as a happily married woman and proud mother to two children, four dogs, and a cat, my dream came true.

Around the Fire with J. Arlene Culiner

10/5/2022

One of the things I love about this blog is the friends I've made over the years. People who not only talk about their books, but share their lives. We've peeked into today's guests life before, but you know the more you talk to someone the more you find out. So join me and my long distance friend from France Around the Fire.
Picture
Welcome back! J. Arlene, can you reintroduce yourself while I pour us some refreshments?
I’m an artist, a writer, a storyteller, and I live in a former inn in a small village in France. I love thinking about who might have stayed in this inn (over the last 500 years), and I do love switching between bedrooms: each one has its own character, and each has secrets. Of course, my imagination is busy digging out those secrets and bringing former guests to life in little stories.

Oh the history grafted into the walls of such places. My in-laws live in a home that is about 150 years. There is always something they uncover while doing projects. What interests besides writing do you enjoy? For instance, what do you read or hobbies you have?
I’m also an amateur musician and I play in several orchestras and bands. I play a variety of instruments: flute, recorder, tuba, oboe, English horn, and all the different baroque oboes.

I remember from your previous visit you talking about sneaking into 13th century empty village churches with excellent acoustics  Do you share you work before it's published?
I write in a void. No one around me—not even my partner Bernard—reads English, so I get no feedback. I just stick with a story, rewrite five or six times, then send it off. I’m lucky that one friend, Jean Livingstone, reads some of my manuscripts and comments on them. And the writer D.S. Knight has also read two manuscripts and given me the most excellent suggestions…and much encouragement.

Who or what books or authors are your inspiration?
Frankly, I can’t even begin to answer this question with one, or two, or even three names. I read in all genres, but I do favor literary travel, and I relish excellent writing.

Other than music, tell us something your life in your neighborhood.
I collect old photos, and I find them in rubbish bins or charity shops. I then invent stories around the people in the photos. The stories and photos end up on the lampposts and walls of a village that is four kilometers away. Since it is a particularly lovely village, many people pass and read what I’ve written. Although many of these stories are outrageous, most actually believe that they’re true.

Do you have a keepsake? Can you tell us what makes it special to you?
Years ago, when I lived in a small village in Hungary (I was doing research for a non-fiction book) a local man who worked in the shameful and smoky open air rubbish tip, decided that being a writer was a lonely, solitary job, and that I needed company. To that end, he started bringing me all the rejected dolls, teddy bears, rocking horses he could find. He would leave them at my gate, and I was always pleased to discover these new friends. Because I couldn’t abandon them again, when I returned to France, they all came here with me.

If you could eat anything in the world right now, what would it be?
An excellent Caesar salad, please. One that is made with grated cheese and a coddled egg and croutons and garlic and olive oil and a bit of vinegar…oh dear, my mouth is watering. Oh yes…could I also have a mojito to wash it down, please?

That sounds delicious. What's your worst household chore?
All household chores come into the category of “worst”. I do, however, rather like washing dishes. Strange…

Would you rather have unlimited international first-class tickets or never have to pay for food at restaurants?
I never travel by plane if I can avoid it— what an ecological disaster planes are! First class train tickets? Okay, I’ll accept. But eating for free at restaurants…you’ll win my heart with that offer.

You and my husband would get along quite well. He loves trains and would travel the world in them. What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?
I do an enormous amount of research. Research is necessary for my non-fiction books, but because I love going through archives and hanging around the National Library in Paris, I also do research for my romances. I love learning new things, and I want to pass on information to my readers, too.

J. Arlene, thank you for spending time with me at the fire. I also appreciate you sending a picture of your delightful abode. And to our other guests, keep reading. There's special insight into Felicity's Power from the author.

Felicity’s Power. It’s a second chance romance (sensual rating).
by
J. Arlene Culiner

Insight from the author.
I think many of us remember someone we once loved, or someone we might have fallen in love with had the circumstances been right. But what would happen if we came face-to-face with that person today? Would the magic still be there? Would our hands tremble, our knees knock together just the way they did back then? Or would we just stare, appalled, wonder how we could once have been so silly?
For me, the idea of meeting up with a romantic ex was intriguing enough to write about, and so, Felicity Powers came to life. She’s strong, determined, the sort of woman who fights for what she wants. And when she first sees Marek Sumner, she wants him to fall in love with her. And because he’s a smart guy, a romantic, he realizes how wonderful his life will be with Felicity in it.
But love doesn’t solve everything, and that’s the problem. If the relationship is going to work, it will mean sacrifice. Too much compromise. Marek wants security, a family; Felicity wants adventure. So, after living together for almost two years, the love story is over.
Well…in a way it’s over. Because, even after years of separation, Felicity has never forgotten Marek. She has spent her life as a foreign aid worker, has been in danger countless times, has done exactly what she set out to do, but she knows Marek was the love of her life. And because she’s a fighter, she’ll try to make their relationship start all over again.
What does Marek think? Of course he’s never forgotten Felicity, and it’s great to see her again. She looks wonderful. And sexy. And exciting. But start over? All these years later? Risk having his heart broken again? He’s older and wiser now. Too smart for all the turbulence and drama.
But that’s definitely not how Felicity sees things.

Back cover
San Francisco, 1971: hippies in the streets, music and revolution in the air. The evening Marek Sumner opened his door to the wild-looking Felicity Powers, he knew nothing would ever be the same. But even love and passion couldn’t keep them together.
Forty-three years later, having lived in the world’s most dangerous places as an aid worker, Felicity is back, still offering love, passion, and adventure. Now a well-known author, Marek loves his calm life in an isolated farmhouse, and he knows their relationship would never work : he and Felicity are just too different. Besides, why risk having his heart broken a second time?
But Felicity is as fascinating and joyful as ever, and the wonderful sexy magic is still there too. Can love be more delightful the second time around?

A peek inside
“You’re right, of course. This dream is going to blow sky high, just the way Owen’s did a hundred and fifty years ago.”
A woman’s voice. Rich, throaty. Lazy. Marek Sumner looked up from the lecture notes he’d been shuffling together. Audacious, slanting brown eyes scrutinized him, taking his measure in a leisurely way.
“You must be the only one here who agrees with me,” he drawled slowly, stalling for time while his own glance played back over her with the same boldness. His gut tingled, a deep, primitive reaction. Nothing to do with words or ideas.
She tossed her head, scornfully. “I know. I spend my days arguing with people who believe a society of peace and love is possible. That, the ‘revolution’ will come, and the police will waltz through the streets distributing flowers.”
“I’ll bet that doesn’t make you many friends here in Haight-Ashbury.” He kept his voice dry, calm, belying the wild, reckless response teasing the edge his consciousness. Adrenaline had begun pumping, tightening his muscles, his skin.
“Of course it doesn’t.” Her shrug showed how little “making friends” mattered to her. “It’s easy for students to claim material goods don’t count. In a few years, when they’re career-oriented citizens with families and mortgages, they’ll change their minds, all right.”
Fascinated, he noted the mass of curling orange hair pulled together in a high, wild, knot at the top of her head. Who are you? Where did you come from? Tallish, very slender, almost fragile—yet tough as steel. He could certainly sense that. Astounding looking. A sharp thrill rippled along nerves stretched elastic tight.
“Of course they will.” He smiled slowly. “Which is why I wanted to give this lecture on the ‘Empire of Good Sense.’ In 1825, Owen’s ideas were radical: common property, equality of the sexes, absolute individual freedom. And, in the end, his commune failed. Just like any hippie ‘revolution.’ ”
The words came automatically. Watching her, he forgot about ideas, time, the room, the people waiting to talk to him, the soft evening sun spilling through the Bookworm’s wide doorway. He forgot everything except this woman standing here, right in front of him.
And she knew it. Her secret smile met his. Still the conversation continued, words weaving together, forming a bridge where they could meet.
“I’ve been called a reactionary three times in the last ten minutes.” He laughed.
“The ultimate insult!” She laughed back, a rich warm sound, as smooth as a caress on his bare skin.
“Thank goodness, as a traitor to the people’s revolution, I’m more likely to be smothered under a blanket of flower petals than face a firing squad.”
“With your detractors all chanting, ‘I love you.’ ” She stopped abruptly, her smile fading, faint shock sliding into her eyes.
I love you. The words—so casually, so mockingly said—had jolted him too.
He stared at her, his excitement pulsing into want. High cheekbones, a thin, slightly aquiline nose. Freckles—childish freckles contradicting the hawk-like ferocity of her features: she was a mixture of Tom Sawyer and a foreign queen. Dancing brown eyes that probed, tempted, provoked. This was a woman certain of her charms, of her magnetism. And aware of her power to seduce him.
He also knew he was having the identical effect on her, and the amused and softened curve of her mouth also showed him she wasn’t considering a refusal. An austere, elegant mouth. Narrow lips. Difficult to pull his eyes away from them…
Then, as quickly as it started, it was over.

More about the author
Writer, photographer, social critical artist, musician, and occasional actress, J. Arlene Culiner, was born in New York and raised in Toronto. She has crossed much of Europe alone on foot, has lived in a Hungarian mud house, a Bavarian castle, a Turkish cave-dwelling, on a Dutch canal, and in a haunted house on the English moors. She now resides in a 400-year-old former inn in a French village of no interest and, much to local dismay, protects all creatures, especially spiders and snakes. She particularly enjoys incorporating into short stories, mysteries, narrative non-fiction, and romances, her experiences in out-of-the-way communities, and her conversations with strange characters.

Arresting Benjamin ~ Arresting Onyx (book 3)
by Amber Dalton
Release Date: October 11th, 2022
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Heat Level: R

With enemies at every turn, how will they survive with their lives and love intact?

Backcover
A one-night stand, a surprise baby, and a mysterious stalker.
Mechanic Benjamin Starwell can’t stop thinking about Belle Hamlin, the ballsy musician he slept with and skipped out on months earlier. He never meant to get her pregnant, but he’ll do whatever it takes to win back her trust and be a part of his child’s life. His desire for Belle drives him to be a better man, but he’s worn thin with a garage to run and his estranged sister dumping her troubles on him.
Belle’s juggling impending motherhood, her indie rock career, and a stalker who’s determined to see her fail. Even though she’s desperate to get her priorities straight, she pushes aside her past hurt and welcomes Benji back into her bed. She never expects him to slip into her heart.
When the danger escalates, they face the greatest challenge of all—protecting their unborn child.

A Peek Between the Covers

“Here we go. That’s the head, an arm, and two legs.” Peggy pointed at the screen as she performed the ultrasound. “All the blackness around the fetus is the amniotic fluid.”
His heart thumped faster in his rib cage. Wow. There’s my baby.
Two splotchy white legs, bent at the knees, protruded from the tiny body. The arm stretched out. Four fingers and a thumb rolled into an itty-bitty fist.
“Just one arm?” Belle’s eyes widened. “Does the baby only have one? What does that—”
“Belle, stay calm.” His stomach dropped to his feet. Oh, God. Would his child need a prosthetic?
“It’s all right. We’re looking at its back and partial right side, so only one arm is visible. The sound waves can’t penetrate the fetus. Give the little one a moment, and he or she should change positions.”
Belle nodded. Her chest rose and fell in quick succession.
He breathed a sigh of relief. Damn. What a mischievous kid. Not even out of the womb and already scaring the hell out of his parents. Her parents. What was it—a boy or girl?
“There’s the second arm.” Belle brushed a tear from her cheek as the baby turned and splayed both arms upward. “Thank goodness, but I should’ve known better. The baby had two arms during the first ultrasound. I’m acting like a fool.”

Inspiration for Arresting Benjamin

I introduced Benji and Belle in book 1 of the series, Arresting Mason, and though they never met in that book, I had a little idea in the back of my mind that they would be perfect for each other. Benji was arrogant, a little gruff, and a total ladies’ man, and I was eager to knock him down a few pegs. Belle was moody and going through a rough patch, romantically, and I wanted her to find happiness. So when I threw this unlikely couple together, fireworks shot off in my head and on the page. They bicker with each other like crazy, but they’re loyal to a fault.
I love stories with characters in reversed roles. Meaning, most of the rock star romance books on the market today feature a rock star hero. Not in my book. Belle is an indie musician with dreams of stardom and has no plans to settle down and start a family—unlike a lot of heroines in standard romances. Getting pregnant upends her life. Benji, on the other hand, is tried of jumping from woman to woman and feels as though he’s missing something vital in his life. Getting Belle pregnant was just what he needed to reevaluate his choices.
I feel like I say this about all my books, but Arresting Benjamin is one of my favorites that I’ve written.  I hope my readers will enjoy it too.
