A Peek Through Author Kimberly Baer's Scary Window

Who: Mother, daughter, fiancée, sister, friend, author, editor, cat-lover. Oh—and brand-new grandma!
(That’s so recent, I keep forgetting! Or maybe I’m in denial that, yes, I am that old.)

Interests: Power-walking, word puzzles, reading. I love stories with a quirky premise. For instance, the novel I just finished reading, The Invisible Life of Addie Larue by V. E. Schwab, is about a girl who makes a
deal with the devil and ends up being forgotten by everyone she meets. The author did a superb job of
examining all facets of that situation.

Network: I’m an editor by trade, and many of my fellow editors are also writers. We started a chat room
at work, Invisible Ink, where we communicate about the writing craft. I also have some steadfast beta
readers and an enthusiastic street team to help me spread the word about my books.

Desk: Messy, with occasional bouts of tidiness. My desk is a garden that won’t stop sprouting weeds.
Papers, books, file folders, sticky notes, index cards, newspaper clippings, potato chip crumbs. When it
gets to the point where I can’t find things, I get the hoe out and give it a good weeding. (Wish somebody
would invent mulch for computer desks.)

Outrageous: I can recite the first nine stanzas of Edgar Allen Poe’s poem The Raven. (See “Window,”
below. Is there a theme developing here???)

Window: What’s outside my window? Birds, dozens of them! And they’re huge—I think they’re vultures.
They travel in a flock; there’s never just one or two. It’s either zero or forty. Did you ever see the Alfred
Hitchcock movie The Birds? That’s what I think of every time I go out for a walk. If those birds ever
decide to swoop down and attack me, I won’t stand a chance.

Oh, I like birds, but that many would probably freak me out. :) Good luck with your book.

Thanks for the good wishes, Jennifer! (Yes, those birds are definitely freak-out worthy!) And many thanks, D. V. Stone, for hosting me on your marvelous blog. Your "WINDOW" format is genius!

Impressive that you can recite the first nine stanzas of Edgar Allen Poe’s poem The Raven, Kimberly. All the best with your new release!

Thanks so much, Mary! To put things in perspective, The Raven contains 18 stanzas, so if reciting it was an academic test, I'd get a failing grade. :(

Oh, gosh, I remember The Raven. We had to memorize some of it to for a class once! And congrats on the grandmother role. You'll love that one too :)

Thanks so much for stopping by, Barb! Do you still have those Raven verses memorized? I still remember some poems I had to memorize in seventh grade..though I can't recall what I had for lunch yesterday!
